About Barbara DeMarco-Barrett

Barbara DeMarco-Barrett is producer and host of "Writers on Writing," that airs on KUCI-FM, and on the Internet.  The show, which broadcasts from the University of California, Irvine (UCI), features noted authors, agents, editors, and poets.  She teaches creative writing at UCI and on September 10, 2001, she was awarded with a 2001 Distinguished Instructor Award. She also teaches private writing workshops.

 

DeMarco-Barrett is editor of The ASJA Monthly: The official publication for the American Society of Journalists and Authors.

She has published several hundred articles in the Los Angeles Times, Poets & Writers, Sunset,  Westways, The Toronto Sun, San Jose Mercury News, and Morning Calm (Korean Air's in-flight magazine), among others. She is former editor of The Local Concierge, a Southern California travel magazine (circ. 40K to 90K).  

 

 

She wrote and co-produced a 1989 documentary on Orange County's growing homeless problem, "Not in My Neighborhood," which aired on Southern California television stations.

 

In 1989, she started a public relations company specializing in artists, writers and entrepreneurs.  She is author of The 1996 Guide to Free Publicity.  In 1997, she began closing out her PR accounts to focus on writing nonfiction and fiction, editing and teaching.

DeMarco-Barrett has taught creative writing since 1989, and her classes fill through university marketing, word-of-mouth and her own marketing efforts. Each class ranges from seven to 15 students. 

 

She is president of the Southern California Chapter of the American Society of Journalists and Authors and is on ASJA's board of directors as chapter representative. She was public affairs director at KUCI-FM from 2000 - 2002 is past-president of the Orange County Fictionaires, a long-standing professional writer's group (see her article on the group in the March/April '98 issue of Poets & Writers magazine) Several of her articles, including the one on the OC Fictionaires, have been syndicated and can be seen at www.featurewell.com. 

 

DeMarco-Barrett lives one hour south of Los Angeles at the beach with her husband, a jazz and blues musician; nine-year-old son; a cat; and an assortment of fish.  Her interests in home design, writers, writing, art, business, vegetarian cooking, and traveling--which has taken her three times to India--have resulted in much published work.
